Explore Wake Surfing at Lake Berryessa

People have been riding waves since the dawn of time.

In the 1950s, what began as a way to recreate the feeling of ocean surfing behind a boat has evolved significantly.

Today, wakesurfing is one of the fastest-growing watersports in the world.

But you might still be wondering what exactly is Wake Surfing?

What is Wake Surfing?

First let’s start with the wake. A wake is the wave that any watercraft puts out on the water as it moves across the surface.

With modern boats we have found a few ways to increase the size of a wake.

One would be an attachment on the side of the boat that creates a consistent wake large enough to surf.

The second would be the development of “Surf boats” that are specially designed to lay lower in the water thanks to ballast tanks.

These tanks hold water to adjust the buoyancy levels of the boat.

This allows for a large enough wake for surfers to use in many ways.

How to Wake Surf

Wake surfing is friendly for all levels of water sport experience.

You start by holding onto a rope and letting the boat pull you up out of the water and onto your feet.

Once you’re standing and balanced you can toss your rope.

You’ll want to throw your rope to the other side of the wake gently so as to not disturb your balance.

You’ll know you’re ready to do this once you feel the rope fall slack.

This will happen when you’ve found the spot in the wave that is propelling you forward.

Why Wake Surf?

Once you can surf the wave without the rope you can begin to learn how to move around in the wave and even learn tricks!

Wake surfing offers a wide variety of opportunities for surfers of all skill levels.

This sport is one of the slowest towed water sports, only travelling at a range of 9 to 13 mph offering a softer landing than wakeboarding or skiing.

Wake surfing is fun for the whole family!
